The history of mental health institutions in our country is vital to our understanding of health care in general and psychiatry in particular. It is not only a chronicle but also serves a heuristic purpose: to learn how the movement for such mental health care sprang up, grew and had not a few a few pitfalls that we ought to learn from.
The present supplement of the Indian Journal of Psychiatry is the first ever collection of essays on the subject. Well known scholars and aficionados, Prof Sanjeev Jain and Prof Pratima Murthy of Bengaluru and Dr Alok Sarin of Delhi, as guest editors, have put together a fascinating treatise on this subject for our perusal. It spans the entire epoch as well as the considerable expanse of India.
Many are the stars that glow on this firmament, individually and as institutions. The guest editors, the contributors to this volume, and our own editorial team led by the indefatigable Prof TSS Rao are to be congratulated for giving us this collectors' item at the Annual National Conference of the Indian Psychiatric Society (ANCIPS), befittingly, at the Central Institute of Psychiatry, Ranchi, itself a treasure trove of such history, now in its centenary year.
